Your Options for a Leander Traffic Citation

When you get a traffic ticket in Leander, Texas law gives you several ways to handle it. Think through each one before you pay.

Paying the fine in full closes the case but counts as a conviction. It gets reported to Texas DPS and appears on your driving record. If you want to keep the ticket off your record, look at the other options first.

Deferred disposition keeps the violation off your record if you complete the probation period cleanly. You plead guilty or no contest, pay a fee, and then avoid another violation for the set time -- typically 90 days. If you do that, the case is dismissed and does not count as a conviction. Request this at or before your appearance date at the Leander Municipal Court.

A defensive driving course (also called a driver safety course) is another option for dismissing a moving violation. Leander has a specific process for this. To be eligible: you must have a valid Texas driver's license, and you cannot have taken a DDC course in the last 12 months. You also cannot currently be completing a DDC for another violation at the same time.

To request a DDC in Leander, you submit a Defensive Driving Request Form, a photocopy of your Texas driver's license, a photocopy of your Texas insurance card showing you as the insured, and the court fees. Fees are $169 for school zone violations or $144 for other moving violations. You can submit by mail or in person to 201 N Brushy St, by fax to 512-690-2214, by email, or through the after-hours dropbox.

After the court approves your request, they send you an approval letter with your completion deadline. You then complete a six-hour state-approved course and obtain a copy of your Texas driving record from DPS. You can request a driving record by calling 512-424-2600 or online. Once you have both, submit your course completion certificate and driving record by the deadline to the court. The case is dismissed.

If you believe the citation was wrong, you can plead not guilty and request a trial. A judge hears the case. This is your right under Texas law.

Leander Traffic Warrants

Missing your court date or not paying a fine can lead to a warrant. The Leander Municipal Court issues alias warrants for failure to appear and capias pro-fine warrants for unpaid judgments. Either type can result in arrest and adds fees to what you owe.

Check for warrants through the Leander online portal or re:SearchTX. If you find one, contact the court to work out a resolution. You can submit documents to the court by fax to 512-690-2214, by email, in person, or through the after-hours dropbox on the south side of the building. Warrants do not expire and show up during traffic stops and at license renewal time throughout Texas.

How to Pay Leander Traffic Fines

Online payment is available through the Leander portal. Search by citation number and pay by card. A processing fee may apply to online transactions.

In-person payment is accepted at 201 N Brushy St during business hours. For after-hours payments, use the dropbox on the left side of the court office door, on the south side of the building. Send a check or money order, not cash, in the dropbox.

Mail payments can be sent to the court address at 201 N Brushy St, Leander, TX 78641. Write your citation number on the payment. Do not send cash.

If you cannot pay the full amount, contact the court before your deadline. Waiting until after a warrant is issued limits your options and adds costs.
