Sabine County is a small East Texas county that sits along the Sabine River near the Louisiana border. Traffic court cases here go through the Justice of the Peace courts, which handle Class C misdemeanor violations. The JP court is the primary venue for speeding tickets, stop sign violations, and most other moving violations issued by county deputies and DPS troopers on county roads and state highways. The District Clerk handles district-level criminal and civil cases in Hemphill.

The county seat is Hemphill, where the courthouse is located at 280 Main Street. The District Clerk's office can be reached at (409) 787-2912. For traffic matters, the Justice of the Peace courts are your main point of contact. Sabine County Traffic Ticket Options

If you get a traffic ticket in Sabine County, you have a few ways to handle it. Paying the fine is the simplest path but it counts as a conviction. That goes on your driving record and can raise your insurance rates. Before paying, check whether you can use deferred disposition or a Driver Safety Course to keep the ticket off your record.

Deferred disposition lets the judge hold your case open for a set period, usually 90 to 180 days. You pay a fee but the conviction is suspended. If you stay out of trouble during that period, the case gets dismissed. No conviction on your record. You must ask for this before or on your appearance date. Do not wait until the deadline has passed.

The Driver Safety Course is another option for most Class C traffic violations. You request it on or before your court date, complete a state-approved 6-hour course within 90 days, and then provide your course certificate and a certified driving record to the court. Under this process the ticket is dismissed. CDL holders are not eligible. You can only use a DSC dismissal once every 12 months. The TexasCourtHelp traffic page has plain-language guides on all these options.

Under Transportation Code Chapter 543, every citation issued in Texas must use the uniform form and include the court name, address, and your appearance date. Check that information on your ticket to make sure you go to the right court.

Texas Traffic Laws That Apply in Sabine County

Traffic violations in Sabine County are governed by the Texas Transportation Code. Chapter 545 covers how vehicles must be operated, including speed limits, passing rules, right-of-way, and other moving violations. Most traffic tickets cite a section from this chapter. Speeding falls under Section 545.351 and 545.352, which set the maximum speed limits and the prima facie speed limit rules for different road types.

Vehicle equipment violations like missing lights or brake problems fall under Chapter 547. Driver license violations, including driving without a valid license, are covered under Chapter 521. Reckless driving is addressed at Section 545.401 and carries more serious consequences than a standard moving violation.

The Texas DPS maintains driver license and driver record information. If you need a certified copy of your driving record for a DSC request or a court filing, the DPS is where you get it. Standard records cost around $10 and take one to two weeks by mail. The Texas DPS also handles license suspensions that may result from traffic convictions or unpaid fines.
